Portuguese artist proposes a reflection on the strength of black people

Portuguese visual artist Rita GT transcends barriers of time and space, exploring the origins of human connections and ethnic richness through her work. Her art challenges the stigmas of slavery while celebrating the wealth of African culture, creating an ‘agreeable discomfort’ within the viewer.

Her solo exhibition Returning in Time/Uíge is hosted at Casa Dell’Arte, a historic mansion turned boutique hotel and gallery in Lisbon’s Alfama neighborhood, running until June 18, 2019. The exhibition is inspired by Rita GT’s artistic residency in Angola, specifically the simple yet deeply connected village of Uíge. Using clay—a material rooted in many religions and philosophies—the artist produced photo-artworks reflecting lost Afro-cultural consciousness and identity across centuries of slavery.
