Rita Guedes Tavares is a Portuguese artist whose work explores themes of memory, identity, and Universal Human Rights. Through objects, images, text, and performance, she interrogates pressing social and political narratives, blending personal and collective histories.
Based in Viana do Castelo— a city in Portugal’s far north and close to the Spanish border— Rita’s practice has been deeply shaped by her experiences living in culturally diverse contexts, including Luanda, Angola, and New York, USA. These cross-continental influences infuse her art with layered perspectives on global culture and history.
Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions worldwide, spanning institutions and galleries in Portugal, the UK, Angola, South Africa, Timor-Leste, Nigeria, Brazil, and Germany.
A passionate collaborator, she works and performs with As Cantadeiras do Vale do Neiva, a traditional folk singing collective, co-founded E-studio Luanda, an experimental art platform, and Kitanda, a visionary project merging gourmet cuisine with contemporary arts.
