Portuguese visual artist and performer Rita GT was the only Portuguese artist invited to participate in the inaugural Lagos Biennial in 2017, curated by Nigerian artist Folakunlen Oshun. Themed ‘Living On The Edge,’ the Biennial aimed to foster cultural, artistic, and political connections from Lagos to the rest of the world.
The event embraced inclusivity and the unifying simplicity of the human experience rather than being driven by Afrocentric ideologies. Born in Porto, Rita GT currently lives and works between Portugal and Angola, and is recognized internationally for her exploration of identity and colonial memory, with a focus on gender and human rights issues.
Among her achievements, she received the Moving Africa Prize from the Goethe Institut in 2013, curated the Angola Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2015, and was invited to participate in the Summer Exhibition of the Royal Academy of London in 2017.
