On March 8, artist Rita GT will present the debut of her video performance Unearthing, dedicated to the stories of women who emigrated during the colonial period. The work was commissioned by the British Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) and will premiere online on YouTube at 6:00 PM, coinciding with International Women’s Day.

Created during a 2018 residency at YSP, Unearthing is a vocal and movement performance featuring the traditional group Cantadeiras do Vale do Neiva and dancers Piny and Isa Santos. It takes place at the historic Fábrica de Louça in Viana do Castelo, where Rita GT currently lives and works. The performance continues her exploration of postcolonial histories, the role of women in society, and their connection to the earth through clay and ceramics.

Supported by the Viana do Castelo Municipality and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Unearthing is part of YSP’s 2021 program dedicated to women artists, which also includes the participation of Joana Vasconcelos, Rachel Kneebone, Annie Morris, and the group exhibition ‘Breaking the Mold: Sculpture by Women since 1945,’ curated by the Arts Council Collection.
